Lindsay’s story

Hello my name is Lindsay Gruer and I am 10 years old.

This is my first year in the Howick 4- H club.  The clubs that I joined are the calf club and the handicraft club.  There is also the garden club and the square dancing club.  But because we do not have a dairy farm, Ken and Amy Tolhurst of Tolhurst Farms allowed me to use one of their calf’s to train and participate at fairs and other events.  With the expertise from the Tolhurst farm team they chose a special calf for me.  Her name is Tolhurst Mascalese Sweet Pea and she was born on March 14th, 2014. Showing a calf takes hard work and a lot of practice.  It involves getting used to the calf and learning how to care for the calf and learn what it eats.  You learn to lead your calf with confidence and give it commands.  When you go in to a competition you have to listen and look at the judge and follow her instructions.  The Tolhurst Farm team made sure that I was well prepared for showing my calf.  They have been very welcoming to me and have been very patient teaching me.  They have an excellent farm set up with an excellent herd of cows.
I have had a lot of fun in the calf club this year.  I love animals a lot and this gave me a real hands on experience.
